Visa Renewal Guide
Check the expiration date on your residence card.
Foreign residents in Japan can start applying to extend their period of stay up to 3 months before the expiry.
Prepare the necessary documents.

Wait for notification of completion.
You'll receive a postcard in the mail summoning you to return to the immigration office. The processing time is approximately 2-4 weeks.
Return to the Immigration Office.
Before returning to receive your visa, you must purchase ¥4000 of revenue stamps (shunyu inshi) [available at the post office] and attach them to "The Certification for Payment of Fee Form."

JETs are responsible for the cost of all transportation fees. However, you may apply for Special Leave to receive the time-off if needed to complete this procedure.

If you're in a specific situation, such as having dependents, required documents may vary. It is recommended that you confirm the procedure and required documents with the Immigration Bureau to which you are applying.

JETs can apply for either a one or three year extension.
